Or church invited Bud Frank, a Wycliffe Bible translator to be our missions conference speaker. He was to have supper at our house one night. When he told us that he was getting a computer for his translation work I decided he would come at two, not six.
Bud's personality and interests fit the "computer bug" mold though he had not as yet had much experience with computers. I showed him Apple Pie word processing and then put on Blitzkrieg and Apple Invaders. He spent the rest of the afternoon blissfully target shooting.
That night he told us about living with a tribe in Africa; of the sickness and deprivation and cultural barriers they had faced. He said that instead of watching TV, the natives constantly watched him and his family. I thought of his afternoon spent quietly with the Apple and was thankful we had given him that time of relaxed pleasure.
I also marveled that God was using his computer aptitude. During the summer Bud will be learning how to program, operate and service Wycliffe's DEC computers. Then, when he returns to Africa, he will run his own computer in the village. His power supply will be a gasoline engine driving a 115 volt generator. He will use the generator to charge 12 volt bateries which will run an AC inverter for the 100 watt computer.
